Like some of us in the industry, I am a second-generation security guy. My father, Joe Lanier, started an alarm installation company after a career as a policeman. This was a common practice back in the 60’s and 70’s for those looking for a better paying career. After responding to so many alarms and knowing that those installing companies were getting revenue from them, he decided to jump in. His company, LaMarCo was started back in 1968. I remember running some service calls on the weekends and fetching tools for him, but as importantly wanting to better understand how the devices and systems worked because of that experience. Joe and others started Defensive Security in 1973 and my exposure to wholesale distribution began. From working the shipping department to taking orders over the phone, I was hooked with being involved in the supply chain of this industry.
After high school, I moved to the big city of Beaumont, TX to go to college and work for Merchants Alarm. This is where the real knowledge of alarm devices came to fruition. Merchants had been in business since 1944 and it showed with the variety of equipment that was installed. Troubleshooting single wire loops, window foil, and ultrasonic motion detectors were an everyday event. From there I moved to the bigger city of Dallas and after specializing in fire alarm systems worked for the Aritech Distribution branch there for a few years, then accepted an outside sales position with Blue Grass Electronics (only you veterans are wincing at these old company names). Another stint in distribution began in 1986 starting as part-owner of Intersec Systems for 5 years and then a 10 year run with ADI as Western Region VP and VP of Systems Sales. Along the way, I developed a real respect for the manufacturers and suppliers in our industry. They are indeed the product “lifeline” for which we all benefit from in our businesses.
I have to state that from Defensive to LRG, I have been absolutely blessed to have worked with some of the best in the business, from industry icons to those in the trenches, I’ve witnessed and learned something from every one of them. It is those same people that have a direct and indirect hand in the shaping of LRG. We’ve had our share of bumps and growing pains, but I am extremely proud to be part of this special family. The LRG extended family, our vendor and distribution partners, are just as valued in this venture. As for the installation and specifying levels of our trade, we know that your success is our reward and we work hard every day to earn the opportunity to help you grow your business.
